Student-athlete pricing is offered by several bike companies under NICA. Other equipment may also be offered at a discount through NICA’s partners and sponsors.

Required items


  • Cross-country mountain bike (proper working order)

  • Bike helmet (proper fit and good condition)

  • Gloves (preferably full-fingered)

  • Spare inner tubes (even if you are running tubeless tires)

  • Closed-toe shoes (no sandals)

  • Water bottles or hydration pack

  • Hand Pump or CO2 (with inflator head)

  • Glasses for eye protection

  • Multi-tool (w/ chain breaker if possible)

  • Clipless pedals - Offers up to a 20% performance boost

  • Cycling computer - Tracking your training is training smart

  • Heart rate monitor - Another way to track your training stress and progress

  • Chain lube - Keeping your drivetrain clean will prevent you from having to replace parts frequently

  • Pump with pressure gauge - Tires lose their pressure daily—low tire pressure is the #1 reason for flats. Pressure should be between 18-25 psi for most athletes depending on tubes or tubeless setup and athlete weight.

  • Medications (if needed)

  • Nutrition - Riding fueled means riding your best

  • Cleaning brushes - Weekly wash keeps your bike performing at its best
